INTRODUCTION

If you ask anyone about Athens, you will hear of the long and illustrious Athenian history, right back from the beginnings of the Greek civilization to the cultural melee of the present day. This guide is designed to provide you with original Athenian insight - nobody knows Athens quite like Quintessentially Hellas. Our guide combines the historic with the modern, the exclusive with the unknown across the whole spectrum of restaurants, bars and clubs as well as the finest museums and the best city walks.

GO THERE FOR

The History: Being a city that has been inhabited for the past 3,000 years, the history of Athens is rich and extensive, centered around the Acropolis and its 2,500 year old Parthenon. Walking down the streets of Plaka and Thisseio you might feel as though you are partaking in a political discussion in the Agora, while you should visit The National Archaeological Museum and New Museum of the Acropolis to really get the full flavour of the city’s history.

Culture: Athens has many theaters offering a range of fantastic performances and, though unknown to most, Athens is also a city of festivals. During the winter months, the Megaro Mousikis, a high tech concert hall, hosts classical music events and dance performances, while during the summer, visitors are able to experience the Herodion Theatre hosting shows from all over the world at the foot of the Acropolis Hill.

The People: Throughout the past decade, the Greek people have greatly increased their international travels, relaying a more cosmopolitan and open minded attitude to the city. Combined with the renowned hospitability of the Greeks, this makes Athens a very interesting place to meet and greet people. Over the past 15 years, Athens has become a truly multi-cultural city, putting it on a par with most other European cities and greatly increasing its understanding of, and interest in, other cultures.

Entertainment:
Greece is famous for its nightlife and as the most visited destination in the country, Athens is a notorious party town. There are more than 6,000 bars, cafes, and nightclubs from which to choose. Many bars, clubs and restaurants occupy two locations, one for the summer months and one for the winter months. Additionally, many Athenian winter establishments head out to the islands for the summer, as do many prominent chefs. In the winter most of the nightlife is concentrated downtown in Kolonaki, Psirri and Gazi and also in the northern suburbs such as Kifissia, Psihiko and Politeia. In the summer, most of the nightlife heads for the southern Riviera, to Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, and Varkiza, where most restaurants and clubs make the most of the weather to be situated outdoors, in the open air on the beach. In comparison to other countries, the Greeks tend to start their night later - 10pm is a good time for dinner and drinks, while people usually head out to the clubs after midnight.

Shopping: Athens is a shopper’s paradise attracting the biggest fashion labels from all over the world. A stroll down Panepistimiou Street and in Voukourestiou Street will bring you to the doors of Hermes, Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Prada and many more. The shopping districts at Kolonaki, Kifissia, and Glyfada are famous for their tasteful boutiques, featuring the latest creations of well established Greek and foreign designers.

Beaches: Though Athens’ beaches are not as famous as those of the Greek islands, there are many beaches in the city that are worth visiting. The most popular are Alimos, Vouliagmeni, and Agios Kosmas, while the beach to be seen at is Astir Beach which offers various water and beach activities, as well as classy restaurants and bars.

DON’T MISS

The Acropolis and Plaka: For those visiting during summer months it is advisable to rise early and head to the Acropolis and its surrounding archaeological areas, avoiding the heat and some of the crowds. Afterwards, take a stroll through to Plaka, the Old Town, and get lost in its small streets, checking out the extensive jewellery and antique shops.

The Acropolis Museum: Following your visit to the Acropolis take the opportunity to visit the recently constructed Acropolis Museum. The museum opened to the public on June 21 2009 and displays nearly 4,000 objects from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece over a 14,000 sqm area. After your visit, take a break at the Museum’s restaurant for a delicious lunch.

Kolonaki, Glyfada and Kifissia - These three neighborhoods are the most vibrant and lively in all of Athens, with Kolonaki in the centre, Glyfada on the coast, and Kifissia on the slope of Mount Pendeli. One can take in three of Athens’ most beautiful neighborhoods with all they have to offer, abundant choices of restaurants and cafes, not to mention high end shopping.

WHEN TO GO

Athens is an all year destination, with each month having something different to offer. The city becomes more vibrant during the summer months with many more tourists visiting from abroad. During these months the city is full of vacationers and availability for services may be limited, so if you are visiting during this period it is best to book ahead of time.
