Geneva is the central crossroads of Western Europe and the city houses around 200 international organizations. Its humanitarian role in major international negotiations is widely recognised and explains why Geneva has been described as the city of peace. The city also offers a huge cultural variety with its 44 museums and Geneva boasts important public and private institutions and foundations. The financial district is also a part of Geneva’s life. As an open-minded city, it has a power of assimilation and integration making visitors feel welcome and at home.

GO THERE FOR

Business – Geneva is probably the city with the highest ratio of banks to the number of inhabitants. Finance is Geneva and Finance is Geneva. Many international deals are made in Switzerland. In 2007, 10 million visitors used the airport of Geneva.

Food and Wine – Geneva is known for its haute cuisine restaurants and bistros in the city and its surroundings. The traditional dishes are filets de perches, longeole, and of course cheese fondue, raclette, rösti and local wines.

The World of Watches – What would Geneva be without its watches! Worldwide known for being “Swiss made”, synonymous with high quality for their mechanism and brand.

A Centre of Art and Culture – The Place Neuve was built outside the former ramparts and is a place of culture for Genevans. It comprises of the Conservatory of Music, the Rath Museum and the Grand-Théâtre, which is famous for its temporary operas. A statue of General Henri Dufour, a national hero, stands in the centre of the square. The Victoria Hall, built in a Rococo style, is the city’s main concert hall with 1,850 seats and has exceptional acoustics, over 2,000 artists, orchestras and choruses have performed there. Today, the Victoria Hall is devoted to classical music performances. The Conservatory of Music of Byzantine style has the privilege of receiving talented musicians, composers and conductors such as Hugo de Senger, Jaques-Dalcroze, Ernest Bloch, Henri Marteau and Ernest Ansermet.

Carouge – This suburb was designed by Turinese architects and grew from the current Place du Marché. It is well-known for its low walled houses, galleries and secret gardens. You will find antique shops, restaurants, bistros and trendy boutiques. The atmosphere is known for its warmth and is often compared to a Mediterranean ambience.

DON’T MISS

Bâtiment des Forces Motrices – The Beaux-Arts style building built in 1886 is a former power plant which operated until the end of the 1980s. It has become a cultural and artistic hangout.

The United Nations – After New York, the ‘Palais des Nations’ is the second most important centre of the United Nations. The City of Geneva donated the park where the headquarters of the U.N. is located. Over 25,000 delegates meet here annually to negotiate for world peace.

Saint Pierre’s Cathedral – On the Cathedral’s North Tower, there is a breathtaking panorama overlooking the city and the lake. The cathedral was built in 1160 but events, including fires, have led to reconstructions which in turn modified its design. In the middle of the 16th century, the Reformation redefined the entire interior of the building which responded to their philosophy of austerity. The current façade is now in a neo-classical style which replaced the former Gothic one.

Jet d’eau – The familiar water fountain called the ‘Jet d’eau’ spouts a column of lake water as high as 450 feet in the air with a wonderful view of the Mont Blanc

Place du Bourg de Four – This has always been the main meeting place in town thanks to its bistros. During Roman times, it was a centre for commerce and became in the mid-16th century a place to accommodate exiled Protestants. The constructions are renowned for their architecture and their well-located private mansions and flats.

Brunswick Monument – The Duke of Brunswick, after having been dethroned and chased from his country in 1930, took refuge in Paris and amassed a tremendous fortune as an extremely talented investor. Living his last three years of his life in Geneva, he asked the city to posthumously build “a mausoleum in an eminent and worthy location, executed according to the established concept by the finest artists of the time, without consideration of cost”. On the square of des Alpes, the Duke still has the privilege to benefit from an envious view. The square boasts an exact replica of the Scaligeri family tomb in Verona, Italy, made in the 14th century.

UNHCR: Visitors’ Centre and Library – The aim of the visitors’ centre is to inform the public about the plight of refugees worldwide and their activities. You will find diverse works about refugees, migrations, human rights, country information and legal publications.

City of Parks – Geneva has 9 parks and each of them has its distinctive theme such as the Bastion Park with its reformation wall, the Eaux-Vives Park with its restaurants and the English Garden with its flower clock. There are also the Botanical Gardens, la Grange Park, la Perle-du-Lac, Rousseau Island, Bâtie Woods and the Alpin Garden.

Electricity: Switzerland's electricity is 220 volts, 50 cycles, AC. Some international hotels are specially wired to allow North Americans to plug in their appliances, but you'll usually need a transformer for your electric razor, hair dryer, or soft-contact-lens sterilizer. You'll also need an adapter plug to channel the electricity from the Swiss system to the flat-pronged American system. Don't plug anything into the house current in Switzerland without being certain the systems are compatible.
