Beautiful people and beautiful weather are the defining characteristics of this bustling cosmopolitan city. Los Angeles can be as intimidating as it is intriguing, and although it is often vilified as a ‘culturally lacking’ and ‘superficial’ city, visitors and transplants alike can agree: LA is a mistress that keeps them coming back for more.

In a city so large there is always a new nook or cranny to explore; Los Angeles is not just one city but is formed from many. Every area in LA has a distinct charm making it unique among its neighbours: Beverly Hills and West Hollywood define glitz and glamour, breathtaking seaside cliffs, stretches of unencumbered beaches, and shorts and flip-flops characterize Malibu and Santa Monica, and high-rise buildings and commercialism define Downtown.

Los Angeles is unique because it is so geographically and ethnically diverse it is sometimes easy to forget where you are. There’s the Pacific Ocean, Santa Monica Mountains, Palm Springs desert, and Big Bear Lake all just a short drive away from each other. Evident through every facet of the city, is LA’s cultural diversity and the influence of ethnicities from all over the world. For hundreds of years, seaside ports have brought thousands of immigrants that have made LA their permanent residence. Communities such as China Town, Olvera Street, Thai Town, Little Armenia and Korea Town give added character and offer some of the tastiest international cuisine around.

LA has an overwhelming number of activities and things to see which can satisfy any personality. There are numerous museums, sporting venues, concert venues, amusement parks, an observatory and an aquarium, to name merely a few. New restaurants open daily and LA is home to world renowned chefs and their flagship locations. LA is also a major launching ground for cutting edge fashion ranging from the luxury boutiques of Rodeo Drive to vintage flea markets and numerous trendy boutiques.

Los Angeles is a kaleidoscopic playground of scenic beauty, culture, dining and entertainment. There is always something to do—simply ask us and we can tell you where to find it.

GO THERE FOR

The Beaches - This is one of the best places in America, if not the world, to hang out and soak up the sun.

The Movies - LA is synonymous with film, and even if the old days of hopeful starlets turning up in their droves are over, enjoy the grand atmosphere of the studios via visits and tours.

The Shopping - LA is a shopper's paradise; the boutiques and shops of Rodeo Drive are a destination not to be missed for anyone with a willingness to spend, spend, spend.

DON'T MISS

The Getty Museum – Presenting the Getty's collection of Western art from the Middle Ages, the museum contains European paintings, drawings, manuscripts, sculpture and decorative arts, and European and American photographs.

Griffith Observatory and Planetarium - An LA icon, this beloved civic venue is one of Southern California's most popular attractions. Containing a new dome, star projector and other technological wizardries, it is the finest planetarium in the world.

Hollywood - Take a stroll along the Walk of Fame, search the footprints in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre, hike up close to the 'HOLLYWOOD' sign, and short of appearing in a film, the Universal Studios backlot tour is probably the best behind-the-scenes glimpse.

Palm Springs – A desert oasis two hours east of Los Angeles perhaps best known for being Frank Sinatra’s out-of-the-city getaway, today Palm Springs still attracts celebrities and public figures – most have second estates here. Golfing, country clubs, desert hikes, horseback riding, and some of the best resorts, spas and fine dining all can be found here.

Santa Barbara – Between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Santa Barbara is a blend of scenic beauty and cultural sophistication. Santa Barbara is home to beautiful coasts, vineyards and the annual Santa Barbara Film Festival. Explore museums, farmer’s markets, wine tasting tours and fine dining.

GETTING AROUND

The best way to get around in Los Angeles is by car rental (for an extended stay) or by taxi cab for a short term stay. There is public transportation but we wouldn’t recommend it since LA is such a spread out city. Evenings out on the town are best enjoyed by chauffeured limo or town car; arrive in style, especially for a night filled with multiple destinations.

WHEN TO GO

California is conducive to visitors all year-round. It is typically sunny during the day but can get a bit chilly at nights during the winter where a light coat in the evening is all you will ever need. For a sand and surf vacation it is advisable to come between late spring and summer (April – August). If you are escaping chillier climates, the holidays here can also be nice; the air is crisp and cool and best of all, A-list holiday parties are in full swing. Temperatures can vary a great deal throughout Los Angeles due to its size and proximity to the sea, for example there is a 20˚F/11˚C difference for the average July high in Canoga Park and LAX. May through October are the driest months and the warmest.

Public Holidays and dates of interest:
1st January – New Year’s Day

WHERE TO SHOP

Private Shopper – Shopping in Los Angeles is more of a sport than a leisure activity. We can arrange for a personal shopper who can provide you with a personal style consultation and then accompany you on an exploration of Rodeo Drive, countless boutiques, vintage marts or wherever strikes your fancy.

Here are a few of our favourite shopping destinations:

Robertson Blvd (between 3rd and Beverly) – The go-to destination of celebrities, stylists, trend setters, and the paparazzi, this stretch is home to the ever-popular Kitson boutique, Lisa Kline boutique, and the newly opened Intermix. Take a break from a day of shopping by eating lunch at the famous Ivy restaurant, located right in the middle of all the action.

Melrose Avenue (between Fairfax and La Brea) – You will find boutiques lining both sides of this bustling street. A definite must see; this section caters to alternative, vintage and Hollywood hipster lifestyles where you can find anything from smoke shops to vintage tees.

Melrose Avenue (between La Cienega and Crescent Heights) – Quickly replacing Robertson Blvd. as the new ‘it’ store destination, along this part of Melrose you’ll find more upscale boutiques including Marc Jacobs, Diesel, Diane von Furstenberg and the legendary Fred Segal store.

Melrose Trading Post – Held on Sundays in the parking lot of Fairfax High School, all proceeds go to student organizations. Around 160 vendors sell antiques, vintage clothing, furniture and specialty items at this flea market.

The Beverly Center – Luxury brands and several department stores over a span of seven storeys make the Beverly Center a serious shopping destination. There is also an extensive food court – so chances are you may never leave!

Rodeo Drive – The ultimate shopping destination for the most famous names in fashion; Fendi, Gucci, Prada and Versace all call it home.

The Grove – A charming outdoor haven for dinner, shopping and a movie, the Grove is one of LA’s most visited shopping centres. Tree lined streets, al fresco restaurants, a movie theatre, shopping boutiques and a Nordstrom’s department store attract all types of visitors. A definite must see for an afternoon of leisure.

Century City Mall aka Westfield Shopping Center Century City – A fantastic open air shopping mall, complete with luxury brands, department stores, a gorgeous al fresco food court, and a popular movie theatre.

Westwood Village – Located just blocks away from the University of California, Los Angeles campus, Westwood has a carefree vibe, probably due to the abundance of college students perusing the shops. Here you will find an array of great small restaurants, a collection of famous Mann theaters that host red carpet premieres and quaint boutiques.

Fashion District Downtown – Los Angeles’ wholesale district encompasses Santee Fashion Alley, the Flower District, the Fabric District, the Jewellery District, and the Toy District. Most stores sell to the public but some require a wholesale license. Be aware that the Fashion District is raw and not in the best part of town but sometimes a good deal is worth it.
