Through The Looking Glass

If you see a white rabbit running down Oxford Street over the coming weeks, don’t be so surprised. London is about to fall through the looking glass and straight into Wonderland. It would seem that the entire city is drawing inspiration from Tim Burton’s latest screen extravaganza and just about everyone wants a piece of Alice.

In honour of the film, Britain’s top designers are coming together to re-invent this classic children’s heroine. Stella McCartney has teamed up with Disney for a range of Wonderland jewellery, including charm bracelets and necklaces with playing cards and Mad Hatter’s hats topped with Swarovski crystals, all in her signature muted palettes.

If a bauble on your wrist isn’t enough to satisfy your craving for an Alice fix then head to Alice Temperley, where thanks to the new Alice Spring/Summer collection you can dress yourself from head to toe in the style of your favourite rabbit-chasing icon. Temperley’s polka dot Tiger shorts, broderie anglaise Bluebell shirt and the delightfully named Mini Tiddles dress will have you reaching for an Aliceband faster than you can say Jabberwocky.

Alice and her wardrobe are firmly on the fashion agenda for this season and if you want to be the first to pick up your slice of the Wonderland pie then head to Selfridges on Oxford Street from the 22nd of February where inside the newly created pop up Wonder Room you will find everything you could possibly need to channel your inner Alice.

This is certainly a trend that will continue to get ‘curiouser and curiouser’ as it grows, but don’t let that hold you back. Embrace the fairytale and indulge in this seasons fantastical fashions, just be careful you don’t lose your head.

In recent years, many affluent folk have traded the glamour of city life for their own version of Never-Never Land. With just their wanderlust instinct for a compass, they are part of a new counter culture that prefers ocean foam to the platitude of a manor lake and wild scrub to svelte lawns. Such Byronic indifference is often sniggered at when you’ve got a honey-pot in Zurich to fall back on. But New York Times and Vogue editor/author Julia Chaplin finds it all rather inspiring.

These wondering outlaws follow in the footsteps of the Romantics and Beatniks before them, riding the Chaplin-coined phrase ‘Gypstream’ as they put a new twist on the jet set lifestyle. Theirs isn’t the 5 * spa in Dubai, the villa and pool in Ibiza, the usual New York fanfare but the star-infused finca on an isolated patch of wood with no name, that art-nouveau paradise on Bali’s forgotten shore, that rundown mansion on a dirtrack in Goa (where you trade cocoa for gritty tobacco). Chaplin calls it the ‘Gypset Style’, an aesthetic she illustrates in a pioneering volume of the same name, a hardback glossy that is all sun-kissed model-fresh nomads in rainbow tunics, smiling mariachis, bona-fide dancing gypsies, and more redolently, Paul Getty on a starlit terrace in Marrakech.

Jade Jagger would rather squat on a yacht than buy one, the Mignot sisters don’t wear designer clothes and Alice Temperley drinks aguardiente, definitely not Cristal. If you want to go ‘Gypset’ then you have to have standards. G5’s bad, Cessna’s good. They don’t do ‘tacky’, don’t mind falling asleep with salty hair and if you like Neil Young’s After The Gold Rush……but what am I saying? After all, if you are a true Gypset, you make your own rules. And as for new-age glamour….well, that’s something you discover for yourself.

‘Alice’ Days

January sales over, winter blues setting in? There’s only one thing to do – daydream of sun drenched days, Cote d’Azur skies and flower filled meadows…As we muddle our way through the winter/spring wardrobe limbo-land there’s a ray of hope on the horizon, a yellow brick road if you will, in the form of ‘Alice,’ the much anticipated diffusion line from the gypset style setter, Alice Temperley herself.

Renowned for her uber-luxe materials, intricate decorative beading and delicate embroidery, the new range will be simpler, more wearable and a little kinder to the bank balance. The entire collection is every girl’s must-have summer holiday wardrobe, in fact the whole idea came to fruition from a collection of Alice’s girlfriends, who piled together their favourite things to take away, their desert-island essentials. And so the basic components of the Alice summer capsule – stripes, denim, broderie anglaise – came to the fore.

Each has been styled and shaped the Temperley way though, infusing them with her signatory ultra-feminine, quintessential Englishness so look out for cute stripey t-shirt dresses, loudly printed playsuits, beautifully cut leather jackets. Some pieces have been enticingly named after her super hip, fashionista friends – think ‘the Jax,’ (pictured) ‘the Laura’ etc …along as there’s not a ‘Cherie’ amongst it all, she’s definitely onto a winner. Bring on those long ‘Alice’ days.
