If you’re looking for a holiday with a bit of pizzazz off the beaten track, you can’t get much more exciting than the Iguazu falls, located on the border between Argentina and Brazil. Imagine the Grand Canyon….with the taps left on.

The waterfalls consist of 275 gushing chutes along 1.6 miles of the Iguazu River, whose source is in the Brazilian state of Paraná. Given the size of the tourist industry generated by this truly breathtaking marvel of nature, it is perhaps no bad thing that the Brazilians and Argentines are able to divide the generated revenue between them. One can easily spend two days exploring the falls and the surrounding jungle on foot, by boat, jeep or even helicopter; and just because you’re in the jungle, there’s no need to be less than civilized. Take your pick from two hotels that stand on either side of the falling curtain of water. The Sheridan, in Argentina, which, despite looking like a cruise ship rising up from the grassy foliage of the rainforest, offers a heavenly spa as well as professional service and luxurious accommodation, and has the advantage of being right in the centre of the jungle. Brazil’s colonial style Hotel das Cataratas is far more beautiful to behold from the outside, and offers equally majestic views of the falls.

If you’re considering a trip to South America, visiting the falls is an absolute must, and there are a number of activities on offer to further your experience, including a white-knuckle speedboat ride that passes beneath one of the more forgiving torrents.

Rio de Janeiro is a city dramatically on the rise after it recently won the 2016 Olympic Games. As construction of new luxury hotels and restaurants takes off, prices are likely to increase dramatically, so now seems like the perfect time to visit. It is generally agreed that one of Rio’s biggest challenges is to move beyond its reputation as a party capital, and the Hotel Santa Teresa is a newcomer to the hotel scene which seems likely to help alter the status of the city.

It is the perfect example of a secluded retreat in the midst of the city where the clubbing scene feels like a different world. The colonial mansion has just reopened after three years of renovation work and, although situated only minutes from the centre of the action, it features luxuriant gardens, spacious rooms and a tranquil spa. The interior has been created by renowned Brazilian designers who have retained the cultural charm of Brazil and have kept the atmosphere homely and personal in each of the 44 rooms.

This authentic hideaway offers a refreshing change from the international hotel chains which dominate the city’s coastline and hopefully marks the beginning of a new wave of luxury boutique establishments.
