Quintessentially Foundation is proud to have been able to help with the building of the new Shree Sankha Devi Lower Secondary School in Nepal. This was accomplished in partnership with our associated charity, Room to Read.
Shree Sankha Devi Lower Secondary School is a newly constructed two-storey building with a total of four rooms. Of these, three are being used as classrooms and one houses a library. The school has 250 pupils, of ages from four to eleven, who are taught by 10 teachers.
Before the restoration by Quintessentially Foundation and Room To Read, the building was in a distressing state. The classrooms were built of mud mortar, stone walls and mud flooring. The roof was made of corrugated sheets that consistently leaked water during the rainy season making it difficult to hold classes.
Now, thankfully, the newly constructed schoolrooms can now accommodate 55 students comfortably. The exterior and interior walls have been plastered and painted and the school now has sufficient lavatory facilities with a good water supply.
The headmaster Baiju Prasad Gupta is delighted with the new building, commenting, “I’m so excited to see what my students can access in their new school. The building is great and so is the library in it.”
The students are also pleased with their new school. “The rooms are far better than what we were used to in our old building. It’s spacious and we all can sit comfortably, the teacher can move about freely, and we don’t have to squint because there’s more than enough natural light in the room,” says sixth former Samita Neupane.
