Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

This February, for three consecutive evenings only, Japanese food legend, Nobu Matsuhisa will be flying into Europe to host a unique, intimate dining experience for the countries most intrepid gourmands, in the private dining room of the stunning Nobu Restaurant on Old Park Lane. Those who are unfamiliar with Matsuhisa will almost certainly be aware of his restaurant, Nobu, a celebrity favourite which is considered to be one of the best restaurants in the capital.

Sushi lovers are invited to be audience to Nobu San as he speaks in person about the tradition, design and creation of his world class cuisine, before being invited to sample delights, created by the expert hands of a world class sushi master. The lucky diners will be educated and inspired, as each carefully curated dish leads in the search of umami – the fifth taste. Each course will be expertly paired with carefully chosen Sake to subtly and authentically counterpoint the dish’s flavour.

Umami is said to be a round, savoury taste, which causes the mouth to water with satisfaction. With a menu that includes King Crab Tempura with Amazu Ponzu and Grilled Wagyu Steak with Jerusalem artichokes and a Nameko mushroom and Sansho pepper sauce, you will not be disappointed

For those who want to come away with a taste of Japan, this will be the perfect alternative to traversing the globe as you are personally entertained by the world’s most celebrated Japanese cuisineur.

Spaces are limited to just 60 seats for each evening, and reservations can be made in advance. Tickets for this unique event are priced at £260 per person.

2010 – The Year Ahead In Food

Monday, January 11th, 2010

2010 is finally upon us, and is promising to be a good year in food. Towards the end of January, we do of course have the Michelin lists for the UK to look forward to, and the results will be as eagerly anticipated as ever. Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester is hotly tipped to upgrade from it’s “Rising Three” star status to become the second London venue to hold three stars. Apsley’s, under the guidance of Heinz Beck, is also tipped to receive recognition – from my own dining experiences at Apsley’s this will be a very well deserved award if successful. There are always a couple of surprises and it will be very interesting to see what’s in store for this year.

Moving on, 2010 promises some fantastic openings around town, such as the imminent launch of Gordon Ramsay’s Petrus, which has only existed in name since Marcus Wareing took over the helm at the Berkeley some time ago. Likewise, the Mandarin Oriental in Knightsbridge, featuring restaurants by highly acclaimed Brit superstar Heston Blumenthal and the 165 seat Bistro from NY super chef Daniel Boulud, promises a double delight for destination dining.

The French remain masters, and so Roux at Parliament Square, a new restaurant from Michel Roux Jnr in the Grade II listed premises of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. will provide an interesting option. Panoramic views over Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament, on top of the great cuisine, will enhance its status as a true destination restaurant.

Looking to the East, a second branch of Hakkasan in Mayfair is certainly a bold move. However, given the success of the two Nobus in such close proximity, it’s not such a bad idea. A relaunch of the short-lived but popular Kyashi on Upper St Martins Lane will offer a sushi bar under the watchful eye of chef Jacky Yu, as well as a more formal dining area with a champagne bar on the mezzanine level for some chilled drinks.

There is plenty more to come, including the long-awaited relaunch of the Savoy Hotel and its restaurants. Considering all this, it may just be time to get that cheap gym membership in place so that you can enjoy the boundless amount of culinary delights in store.

Aqua Kyoto – The Best Cocktails in Town?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Perched on top of the old Dickens and Jones building on Regent Street opposite the Apple Store, Aqua Kyoto is a new Japanese restaurant which is slowly becoming the hottest place to imbibe cocktails and sushi .

Once you’ve set foot into the discrete entrance, two lifts whizz you straight up to the top floor where a sliding set of doors open up to a black circular cocktail bar. A collection of gold-lit booths populate the bar on both sides. A special credit must go to the unnamed mixologist who has created some of the most unique and delicious cocktails in London. Try the ‘Rose & Li’ which arrives in a long flute with Louis Roederer champagne, rose liqueur, lychee and flowering buds or the ‘Violet Flute’ in which a base of Tanqueray Gin with violet liqueur and saffron syrup is topped up by Louis Roederer champagne.

We won’t muse on the food much but will only simply say that Nobu and Zuma have competition on their hands. With a grand sushi bar in the middle of the room next to a glass-fronted private dining room, expect the London’s glittering hordes to descend en-masse.  Tell us what you think of the food below.
