Bloomin’ Marvellous

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Brunch – possibly the only time when it’s socially acceptable to drink before midday.

One of the best brunches I’ve tried recently is at Bloom, which has just opened for weekday lunches and weekend brunches in addition to its nightly dinner service. Bloom has developed quite a reputation for its sleek style and NYC/bistro fare, and opening its doors to the lunchtime crowd is a good move – the restaurant takes on a totally different feel during the day. Gone are the dim lights and underground speakeasy vibe; instead, the restaurant is flooded with light from the large windows and it feels like a much friendlier, less intimidating and more casual space.

The key to kicking off a good brunch is, of course, a fantastic Bloody Mary. Bloom offers a choice of Bloody Mary cocktails (original was tangy and subtly spicy) as well as a Bloody Mary bar with a choice of ingredients. Pick and choose your unique blend and the helpful bartenders will mix it up for you in a tall tumbler with plenty of old school, square cut and solid ice.

The menu is short and sweet, opening with eggs and finishing with a list of items from the raw bar and selection of Bloody Marys. Fresh oysters and a Bloody Mary – now that’s my idea of a decadent start to the day.

The mains run the gamut from Eggs Benedict (known here as Bloom Benny) to a full fry up with American ‘biscuits’ (savoury scones to us Brits) with a meaty sausage patty, grilled tomato, extremely crisp bacon and herby hash browns. The Bloom Benny uses thick-cut ham and though the rind was a little fatty, the hollandaise sauce allowed the flavour of the eggs and ham to shine through. The hash browns were a posh version of the classic American side dish, jazzed up with rosemary and fried to a crisp; they were salty, moreish and oh-so-good.

The highlight of the meal was the ending – an oatmeal crème brûlée: dessert, breakfast style. Big enough to share between four people, this particular brûlée comes topped with deliciously chewy oatmeal, fresh strawberries, bananas and raspberries, and is the best re-interpretation of breakfast/dessert I’ve ever had.

Given its gourmet pedigree, the relaxing environment and the delicious food, Brunch at Bloom is terrific value for money and definitely one of our favourite new brunch spots in Hong Kong.

Peak Perfection at Amangani

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Winter at Jackson Hole, skiing in the Rockies doesn’t get much better than this. On average the mountain gets nearly 500” of snow every season.
It’s late fall and at 7000’ above sea-level the season is quickly changing into the long winter ahead. Most of the Aspen trees in the valley have already dropped their leaves but higher up at Amangani we’re still surrounded in bright yellow.

The temperatures have started to drop to below freezing at night though it still warms up to shirt-sleeve weather by noon, pointing to imminent snow-fall and the opening of the ski area. And what a ski area it is. 2500 acres of in-bound terrain with 116 ‘named’ runs, is just the start. There is nearly unlimited space to carve your own runs through the trees, let alone the 3000-plus acres of back-country access where deep powder and unexplored runs await the adventurous.

Each day at Amangani begins with the Teton Range at your toes. Head down to the Grill for a hearty pre-ski breakfast, before hopping into the Amangani shuttle and down to our private ski-lounge nestled just steps between the Bridger gondola and the high speed tram, where our ski concierge team has stored your skis and boots.

Find out which runs are skiing the best and head up the hill. Take the tram and get out at over 10,000 feet and marvel at the view. Then turn right and make a pass down Rendezvous Bowl over toward Bivouac Woods, then down to the Sublette high-speed quad chair. Repeat until exhausted. Now turn back down to the Amangani Lounge and grab a quick bite and something warm to drink, rest your thighs a bit and do it all over again.

At the end of the day toss your skis down in the lounge, grab a beverage and head back up to Amangani. Right about now a quick dash through the spa to the Jacuzzi followed by a massage would be a great plan.

You’ll need a big meal after a day like today; I’d go for a plate of bison short-ribs and a glass of merlot. You’ve tamed a big mountain today; sleep tonight will be deep and hold dreams of new runs to conquer in the morning. It really doesn’t get much better than this.

Bright Young Things

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

As the fashion world eagerly prepares for the upcoming London Fashion Week, Selfridges have dusted off the Christmas displays, stashed away the sale rails, and taken a radical new direction by giving twenty up and coming designers a unique platform to display their work.

The fashion forward department store has taken its pick of 20 young fashion ingénues who they believe will be showing at the fashion weeks of the future. Their creations receive maximum exposure in a unique window display, entitled ‘Bright Young Things’. The display features a range of creative talents, from illustrators to milliners, and the results range from achingly stylish to down right mad; Charlie Le Mindu, for instance, has created outfits made entirely from hair.

The youth of the designers chosen is striking. LiLee, whose lady-like designs incorporate a mixture of lace and rope trimming, only graduated from London College of Fashion last year. Another designer making their first foray into retail is Alex Noble, best known for having designed Lady Gaga’s infamous lace bodysuit, worn to last year’s Brit Awards.

These designers have been selected for their potential to ‘make it big’, so it will be music to the fashion lover’s ears to hear that each designer has created a piece to be sold exclusively in Selfridges pop-up and online stores.

This will prove to be a guilt free shopping experience, where the savvy stylista will come away with a unique fashion investment, hoping to have bought a piece by a ‘bright young thing’ who could just turn out to be the next-big-thing.

‘Bright Young Things’ will appear in the windows of Selfridges until 28th February. To find out more, visit Selfridges
