Time for Tea at Harrods

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

Not satisfied with a pizzeria, rotisserie, ice cream parlour, champagne bar, several cafes, caviar bar, sea grill, steakhouse, sushi bar and multiple fine dining options, Harrods have decided that there’s something missing in their gastronomic offerings. And lo, The Tea Room was born.

Celebrating the best of British, The Tea Room features a quintessentially English line-up of mouth-watering fare. Open all day, it’s the perfect stop for either a hearty breakfast before your shopping or a sumptuous break from all that exertion, letting you rest your weary feet as you indulge in some afternoon fancies and a cup of tea.

But guests beware; The Tea Room is one of those places you just won’t want to leave. Mixing a bistro vibe with that of a traditional English tea-room, it’s filled with luxurious green velvet studded sofas and simple wooden chairs, creating an elegant yet understated surround. What’s more, the food is to die for as the kitchen offers a variety of delicious options, from buttery brioche to tasty quiches and salads. It’s a wonderful treat any time of the day.

However, the traditional Afternoon Tea is the pièce de résistance, featuring a range of finger sandwiches, sweet and savory scones and delectable English fancies. With so many scrumptious treats including passion fruit posset, after eight pastry, boozy English trifle, banana pie bomb and lemon meringue slice, you might struggle to find a favourite.

So let us give you a suggestion – try the sticky toffee pudding gateaux accompanied by the Vanilla Excellence Chinese black tea. It’s the perfect sweet afternoon treat to stave off those winter blues.

The Tea Room is located on the Second Floor of Harrods and is open Monday-Saturday 10am-8pm and Sunday 12pm-6pm.

Pret a Por-Tea?

Pret_a_Portea_main

As every fashionista knows; cupcakes, macaroons and cookies do not a Miranda Kerr doppelganger make. Thanks to the current heat wave, this thought has never been more prevalent in my mind as the sun forces my body out of its winter hibernation. My summer wardrobe is now a horrifying reality and this thought alone is enough to make me reach for the carrot sticks, leaving the delectable, Jason Wu belted mini dress mocking me on its hanger.

But what if I said that the Jason Wu mini dress was not made from (scarily) scanty silk, but was in fact fashioned from delicious poppy-seed dough, embellished with ruffled purple icing? Well, at The Berkeley this summer, you can find Jason Wu, Christopher Kane, YSL and Chanel all elegantly served up on a plate, thanks to their spring/summer inspired Prêt-à-Portea afternoon tea.

This sugared sartorial indulgence has been created by head pastry chef Mourad Khiat, a trend-setter that drops in on London Fashion Week to inform on his delicate patisserie creations. His top selection for Spring/Summer 2010? The hat – which is why the current Prêt-à-Portea collection is representative of this “statement accessory”: one outfit finds Paul Smith orange, papaya and pink lavender bavarois smiling beneath a jaunty chocolate bowler hat.

Other trend-infused delights include the must-have clog biscuit, adorned with chocolate brown studs and white leather glaze, a Christopher Kane pink almond macaroon filled with white chocolate and elderflower ganache and the decadently dark Erdem chocolate cake, laced with passion fruit.

Prêt-à-Portea is served in The Caramel Room at The Berkeley from 1-6pm every day, and the über fashion-conscious can opt for a glass of couture Champagne with their treats. It all just confirms what we already know – you have to eat, sleep and breathe fashion. Just be careful not to end up with cake on your face – even if it is Chanel.

Flowers, scones and champagne – it sounds like a match made in heaven.  Add the luxurious surroundings of The Promenade at The Dorchester and it’s almost too grand to be true.

Champagne Laurent-Perrier has teamed up with The Dorchester to create a scrumptious Floral Champagne Afternoon Tea – exclusively available for Chelsea Flower Show week (24th-30th May 2010).

Served in the delightful Promenade, a selection of freshly cut sandwiches, warmed scones and delicious pastries, are accompanied by a glass of Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé served in a pretty cherry-blossom glass.   The exceptional freshness of the Cuvée Rosé and unique aromas of freshly picked red berries make it a delicious afternoon drink, and the perfect partner to both sweet and savory dishes.

Claude Lamarche executive pastry chef at The Dorchester explains, “I have paired two new pastry dishes with the Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé for The Dorchester’s Floral Champagne Afternoon Tea – the ‘Summer Bouquet’ a lychee, raspberry and rose mousse, and ‘Strawberries and Petals’, strawberries covered in vanilla with hand-made edible petals.  Both pair wonderfully with the champagne’s unique berry taste”.

The Dorchester’s Floral Champagne Afternoon Tea  will be served from Monday 24 May until Sunday 30 May at 2.30pm and 4.45pm, and is priced at £44 per person.

For reservations, please telephone The Dorchester on 020 7629 8888 or email restaurants.uk@dorchestercollection.com.
